Jordanian army shoots down drone from Syria carrying drugs

The Jordanian military on Sunday shot down a drug-carrying drone that was flying into Jordanian territory from neighboring Syria, state news agency Petra reported, Reuters reports.

War-torn Syria has become a hub for the multibillion-dollar drug trade, with Jordan a major transit route to the oil-rich Gulf states, with the Syrian-made amphetamine known as captagon, say Western counter-narcotics officials and Washington. .

Citing a source within the Jordanian armed forces, the state agency said in a statement that the drone "was brought under control and crashed."

The Jordanian military has previously shot down drones from Syria carrying narcotics or weapons.

Military and security officials from Jordan and Syria have met to discuss ways to curb the growing smuggling problem. Despite promises from Damascus, Jordan says it has not seen any real efforts to crack down on illegal trade./ CNA
