Powerful explosions at a missile depot in Damascus

Powerful explosions from a site where pro-Iranian militias kept missile stocks east of the Syrian capital, Damascus, were heard in the early hours of Sunday.

Residents of the Damascus region heard explosions coming from "a warehouse of pro-Iranian militias" located in a mountainous area east of the capital, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

This organization, based in Britain, receives information from a network of sources inside Syria.

"We don't know if [the explosions] happened from an air strike or from operations on the ground," the head of this organization, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP.

During more than a decade of war in Syria, neighboring Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Syrian territory, mostly targeting Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters, as well as Syrian army positions.

The Syrian state news agency, SANA, said that during the night "explosions were heard" on the outskirts of Damascus.

Four Syrian soldiers and two Iranian-backed fighters were killed last Monday after an Israeli airstrike near Damascus, the Observatory said.

The airstrikes have targeted Syrian regime forces, but also military positions and weapons depots used by armed groups backed by Tehran, the monitoring group said.

With the support of Iran and Russia, the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has retaken most of the territory that rebels took at the beginning of the conflict that began in 2011.

Israel rarely comments on the attacks it carries out in Syria and has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to expand its presence in the country.
