The US military carried out attacks on the facilities of the Houthi group

The United States carried out five strikes in areas of Yemen controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi group, the US military's Central Command said on Sunday.

The command said it struck three missiles, an unmanned submarine and an unmanned ship in self-defense on Saturday.

"This is the first time the Houthi group has observed the use of an unmanned submarine since they began attacks on October 23," CENTCOM said in a post on Platform X.

Central Command said it had concluded that the missiles and ships posed an immediate threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant shipping.

The Houthi group's attacks in the Red Sea area are one of the indicators of the spread of the conflict in the Middle East since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out after the Palestinian militant group's deadly attack on Israel on October 7.

Houthi militants, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, say their attacks are in solidarity with the Palestinians as Israel strikes Gaza.

But the US and its allies say they attack indiscriminately and see them as a threat to global trade. In the face of increasing violence in the Red Sea, major shipping lines have avoided using this critical trade route, undertaking longer voyages around Africa.

This has driven up costs, raising concerns about global inflation, and depriving Egypt of critical revenue from shipping on the Suez Canal to the Red Sea./ VOA
