Ukraine and China, talks on the possibilities of peace

The Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, has discussed with his Chinese counterpart the possibilities of peace in the almost two-year war between Kiev and Russia.

This discussion is part of an effort by Ukraine to strengthen relations with Beijing.

"I met with the Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, to discuss bilateral relations, trade and the need to restore a just and lasting peace in Ukraine," Kuleba wrote in "X". The conversation took place during the Security Conference in Munich.

Kuleba said he discussed Ukraine's plans to hold a world peace summit, which Switzerland has agreed to help host. He said that with the Chinese counterpart "we agreed on the need to maintain Ukraine-China contacts at all levels and continue our dialogue".

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has not released details of the Wang-Kuleba conversation. But during an address in Munich, Wang said China has insisted on promoting peace talks and is playing a positive role in restoring peace, according to a statement released by the Chinese ministry on Sunday.

Ukraine has sought to strengthen relations with Beijing and get China's support for Ukraine's 10-point peace plan that focuses on withdrawing Russian troops from occupied territories, restoring the 1991 borders after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and a framework is created that would hold Moscow accountable for its actions.

China, which has said it has a "strategic partnership" with Russia, last year presented its own peace plan that called for a ceasefire, negotiations and an end to sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. However, Beijing's plan has received little support./ REL
