The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), which has expressed deep concerns about Italy's agreement to process some asylum applications of migrants in two centers in Albania, has agreed to monitor the first three months of the agreement's implementation. .

UNHCR emphasized that it is not part of the agreement between Italy and Albania, adding that there are still reservations regarding the agreement. This agency also said that it has asked for clarification on how the agreement will be implemented.

But UNHCR said on August 15 that it has agreed to monitor implementation in order to help "respect the rights and dignity of the persons who are subject" to the agreement.

The agency said it will advise migrants of their right to seek asylum and ensure that the procedures used are "in line with international and regional human rights standards, are fair and provide protection and solutions for those in need of international protection".

Italy and Albania last year reached a five-year pact. According to the agreement, Albania will host migrants who will be rescued at sea, while Italy will examine their asylum requests with an accelerated procedure. The two centers where the immigrants will be housed were supposed to be operational this week, but due to construction delays, their opening has been postponed.

The two centers, which will be financed and managed by Italy, can accommodate up to 3,000 migrants who will come from Italy by sea./ CNA
