A Russian court in Yekaterinburg has sentenced American-Russian citizen Ksenia Karelina to 12 years in prison after finding her guilty of treason. She was found guilty of transferring US$51 to a Ukrainian charity in early 2022.

The verdict was handed down by judge Andrei Mineyev after prosecutors sought 15 years in prison for Karelinan, who also goes by her married name, Khavana.

Karelina's lawyer, Mikhail Mushailov, said she has admitted making the donation, but the legal team plans to appeal the decision.

The ruling came a day after a Moscow court sentenced an American citizen identified as Joseph Tater to 15 years in prison. He was found guilty of hooliganism.

Karelina, 33, moved to the United States in 2015, married an American citizen and became a US citizen in 2021.

She was arrested in Yekaterinburg in January on suspicion of hooliganism.

However, she was charged with treason on February 7 after investigators learned that on the second day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, she had transferred $51 to Razom, a Ukrainian aid group that helps affected civilians. from the war.

Lawyer Mushailov said that prosecutors found evidence of this donation on his client's phone.

In February, Razom co-founder Dora Chomiak called on the US government to "continue to do everything possible to ask [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to release all those unjustly detained in Russia."

Mineyev said that in Karelina's case it was the same judge who in July sentenced American journalist Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in prison on charges of espionage.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was involved in the August 1 prisoner swap, when Radio Free Europe reporter Alsu Kurmasheva, former US Marine Paul Whelan, and several imprisoned Russian dissidents were also released.

According to human rights groups, almost 900 Russians have been convicted on charges of treason, espionage or collaboration with foreign governments since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine./ REL
