Ukraine marks its third Easter at war

As Ukraine marked its third Easter at war, Russia attacked the country on Sunday with a barrage of drones focused on eastern Ukraine. As a result more than 12 people were injured.

Ukraine's air force said Russia attacked with 24 Shahed drones, of which 23 were downed.

Six people, including a child, were injured in the drone attack in the eastern Kharkiv region, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said. Ten others were wounded in an airstrike on Sunday afternoon in the regional capital Kharkiv, Mr. Syniehubov said, adding that the city had been attacked from the air.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that its troops had taken control of the village of Ocheretyne.

Officials in Kiev urged residents to attend Orthodox Easter services online due to security concerns.

In his speech, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Ukrainians to "pray together" on this holy day.

Most Ukrainians identify as Orthodox Christians, although the church is divided. Many of them belong to the independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The rival Ukrainian Orthodox Church is loyal to the Moscow church and is viewed with suspicion by many Ukrainians.

In Moscow on Saturday evening, the faithful, including President Vladimir Putin, packed the city's historic cathedral for an Easter service led by Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church and an outspoken supporter of the Kremlin.

Eastern Orthodox Christians usually celebrate Easter later than the Catholic and Protestant churches, as they use a different method to calculate the date for the holy day that marks Christ's resurrection./ REL
