The Turkish Defense Ministry said it has launched airstrikes in northern regions of Syria and Iraq, targeting Kurdish groups that Ankara holds responsible for last week's bomb attack in Istanbul.

Warplanes attacked bases of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, and the Syrian People's Protection Units, or YPG, the ministry said on Sunday.

The Defense Ministry said 89 targets, including shelters and ammunition depots, were destroyed in the airstrikes.

The announcement added that "the so-called leaders of the terrorist organization were among those neutralized."

Turkey said the attacks were carried out based on the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported that a Turkish soldier and two policemen were injured as a result of a missile fired in Turkey's Syrian border province of Kilis.

Anadolu said the missile hit an area near a border checkpoint, but gave no further details. Earlier, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said they would retaliate against Turkish airstrikes on Sunday./ VOA
