Trump criticizes UK for delay in using military bases

US President Donald Trump has criticised the United Kingdom's decision to allow the use of its military bases by the United States, calling it a long-overdue response.

Speaking outside the White House, Trump said he was a little surprised by London's reaction and added that the early US ally should have acted sooner.

His comments relate to the strategic base on Diego Garcia, part of the Chagos Islands. The UK has agreed to transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius and then lease the base to the US.

Earlier, the British government confirmed that it had approved the use of its bases by the US for military operations related to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz region, a key area for global oil trade.
