Two US federal prosecutors are conducting criminal investigations against Colombian President Gustavo Petro for possible links to drug traffickers, a matter that had not previously been made public.
The investigations are in the early stages and it is not clear whether they will lead to criminal charges.
Federal prosecutors' offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn are leading the investigation, which focuses on two points: whether Petro had meetings with drug traffickers and whether his presidential campaign received illegal donations from people connected to the drug trade.
Investigators have interviewed drug traffickers who have spoken about contacts between Petros' representatives and other individuals, including possible issues of obstruction of US extraditions.
Petro has denied any involvement in drug trafficking and has maintained that his government is committed to the fight against the cartel and cocaine cultivation./CNA
