Oil Crisis/ Energy Agency Recommendations

Oil Crisis/ Energy Agency Recommendations

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is calling for urgent measures to reduce consumption as a result of the oil crisis.

The International Energy Agency has called for urgent action to reduce fuel use in the wake of the Iran war. The recommendations focus on transport, which the IEA says accounts for around 45 percent of global oil consumption. The agency says even simple changes in behaviour can have a rapid impact, so it is recommending changes in drivers' behaviour to quickly reduce consumption: speed limits, working from home, fewer flights.

A greater shift to public transport could also reduce fuel consumption. Furthermore, according to the IEA, a reduction of at least ten kilometres per hour in speed limits on motorways would reduce fuel consumption in both passenger and freight transport. Access restrictions for cars in large cities - such as alternating between cars with even and odd number plates - could also help. This would reduce congestion and reduce fuel consumption.

Strategic reserves released

The agency sees additional savings from more efficient management and improvements in freight transport and distribution. Fewer flights would also reduce demand for oil during the crisis. The IEA recommends targeted efficiency measures, not extensive state subsidies, as past crises have shown.

At the same time, the agency said its member countries have already started releasing strategic oil reserves. The released reserves will "consist mainly of crude oil," with contributions from Europe "mainly in the form of refined products," the IEA said. The organization decided a week ago to release 426 million barrels of oil from its emergency reserves to cushion the price rise caused by the war in the Middle East./ DW
