Starmer: 'Sooner or later' Russia will have to engage in ceasefire

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer encouraged his counterparts to continue efforts for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. His comments came during a virtual meeting held via the internet on Saturday, aimed at ending the fighting between the two countries.

The British prime minister said during the meeting, which was attended mainly by European leaders, that "sooner or later" Russia will have to engage in talks to reach a ceasefire in the third-year conflict.

The meeting was attended by leaders from mainly European countries, as well as those from Australia, New Zealand and Canada, but not from the United States.

"Sooner or later, he's going to have to come to the table," Mr Starmer said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Earlier, United States President Donald Trump called on Moscow to accept a ceasefire agreement agreed upon by American and Ukrainian delegations gathered in Saudi Arabia.

Also, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that "the ball is now in Russia's court."

Russian President Putin said he agrees in principle with the ceasefire, but that Russia still has several conditions and question marks that need to be addressed before the agreement is accepted.

In his evening speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that President Putin is delaying the process and has put forward so many preconditions that "nothing will work."

Meanwhile, the United States has expanded sanctions on Russia's gas and oil, as well as its financial sector.

Saturday's discussion among world leaders could address future military and financial support for Ukraine, as well as concerns raised by Mr. Zelenskyy about security aspects, should a peace deal be reached. The Ukrainian president was among the participants in Saturday's virtual meeting./ VOA
