Sri Lanka elects new president
The newly elected President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Sri Lankan MPs have elected the current prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, to the post of president, despite his lack of public support.

Wickremesinghe will lead the country at a time when the economy has collapsed. He must also restore public order after mass protests in recent months, fueled by the economic situation.

The Parliament of Sri Lanka voted today for the election of the president and Wickremesinghe had Dullus Alahapperuma as his opponent.
