Several cities across France hit record temperatures on Monday as the country is gripped by a dangerous heat wave.

France's national meteorological office said the thermometer hit 39.3 degrees Celsius in the northwestern city of Brest, compared with a previous record of 35.1 degrees Celsius from 2002.

The city of Saint-Brieuc clocked in at 39.5 degrees Celsius compared to a previous record of 38.1 degrees, while Nantes, in the west, recorded 42 degrees, surpassing the previous record temperature of 40.3 degrees recorded in 1949. .

The all-time highest temperature recorded in France dates back to 2019 when the southern village of Verargues, north-east of Montpellier, recorded 46 degrees Celsius.

Drought conditions and extreme heat since the start of summer have left large parts of France without water, causing problems for farmers and sparking forest fires.

Temperatures could reach record levels in 15 regions in southwest France. The fires in France in recent days have forced over 24,000 people to evacuate.

In Gironde, a popular tourist region in the southwest of the country, fires have destroyed over 14,000 hectares of forest since last Tuesday./ REL
