Iran and Gazprom sign energy deal
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Russian state energy company Gazprom have signed a memorandum of understanding worth about $40 billion, the Iranian news agency SHANA reported.

The agreement, reached on July 19, coincided with the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tehran. The Russian leader is participating in a summit with his counterparts from Iran and Turkey.

SHANA reported that Gazprom will provide support to the National Oil Company of Iran in the development of gas fields in Kish and North Parsin, as well as six oil fields.

document states that Gazprom will also be involved in the completion of liquefied natural gas projects and the construction of gas export pipelines.

Iran is the second country in the world, after Russia, with the largest gas reserves. But the sanctions imposed by the United States have prevented Tehran from having access to technology and have slowed down the development of gas exports.
