UN chief alarmed by escalation in Israel-Iran relations

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that there could be "major consequences" if fighting between Israel and Iran continues to escalate.

In a statement released by his office, Guterres says:

"I remain deeply alarmed by the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East between Israel and Iran . "

The UN chief reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire, adding that any "further military intervention could have grave consequences, not only for those involved, but for the entire region and for international peace and security more generally."

Guterres calls on UN member states to fully implement the UN Charter and international law, saying diplomacy is the best way to address security issues in the region./ CNA
