The Iranian government has urged its citizens to uninstall WhatsApp from their mobile phones and other devices. The appeal, broadcast on Iranian state television, claims that the app collects user data to share with Israel, although there is no specific evidence to support this claim.
In response, WhatsApp has strongly denied these allegations. WhatsApp has expressed concern that such false claims could provide a pretext to discontinue its services at a time when they are needed most. The company stressed that it uses end-to-end encryption to protect user privacy.
In their statement, WhatsApp clarified that they do not track precise locations, keep records of who is messaging whom, or monitor individual messages exchanged between users. Furthermore, they stated that they do not disclose information to any government.
Over the past few years, Iran has blocked access to various social media platforms, but many individuals in the country bypass these restrictions by using proxies and virtual private networks (VPNs) ./ CNA
