US concerned about Israeli settlement expansion plans

The Israeli government has advanced plans to build around 5,700 new homes in the occupied West Bank.

This announcement comes despite American pressure to stop the expansion of settlements, which it sees as an obstacle to peace with the Palestinians.

A spokesman for the White House has said that Washington is "deeply concerned" by these developments.

Four Israelis displaced in those areas were shot dead by Palestinians last week, sparking days of violence.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has said that the attackers were members of it.

Violence between Palestinians and Israelis has erupted since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office last year.

His nationalist-religious coalition has vowed to expand its presence in the West Bank.

According to the Israeli anti-expansion group Peace Now, the past six months have seen more than 13,000 homes being built in the West Bank - about three times the total last year.

"The Israeli government is taking unprecedented steps towards the complete annexation of the West Bank," the organization said in a statement.

Most states consider settlements in the area – built on land occupied by Israel in the 1967 war – to be illegal under international law.

Israel does not agree with such an assessment./ Rel
