Serbia puts army on "high alert"

According to Serbian Defense Minister Milosh Vu?evi?, Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? has ordered the "highest military readiness" for the Serbian army. Previously, it was the chief of the Serbian General Staff, Milan Mojsilovic, who had stated that "due to the complicated situation" he was sent to the border with Kosovo by the Serbian president, reports the German news agency, dpa. The situation is serious and requires "the presence of Serbian armed forces along the administrative border", Mojsilovic was quoted by RTS television. But what this order means is unclear, because Serbian forces have been on alert for some time.

Serbia, which does not recognize Kosovo's independence and still sees it as its own breakaway province, supports the Serbian minority in the north in its efforts to challenge the authority of the Pristina government. The European Union's mediation efforts have not shown results. Meanwhile, tensions for years in the north of Kosovo have increased in recent weeks. About 50,000 Serbs living in the north reject Pristina's state institutions. Week-long roadblocks hold up traffic. The recent shootings near NATO units have also been met with concern by the international community./DW
