Russia says it has talked with the US about the nuclear weapons treaty

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said he discussed the nuclear arms control treaty with the new United States ambassador, Lynne Tracy.

He said discussions on the New START treaty took place last week, Russian news agency Interax reported.

Ryabkov added that Russia is committed to the treaty, but gave no date for when a new round of talks could be held, citing the conflict in Ukraine.

Talks between Moscow and Washington on the New START treaty were scheduled to take place last November, but were suspended at the last moment.

The United States has previously accused Russia of violating the treaty by not allowing inspections to be carried out on Russian territory.

The New START treaty, which entered into force in 2011, limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the US and Russia can deploy, and also limits the deployment of land-based and submarine-based missiles./REL
