Russia: We will retaliate if EU arms Ukraine with profits from our assets

Russia will take retaliatory measures in line with its interests and use all legal mechanisms at its disposal if the European Union uses profits from frozen Russian assets to buy weapons for Ukraine, the Kremlin said on March 21.

The spokesman of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, made these statements before the meeting of EU leaders in Brussels, where this issue is expected to be discussed.

"Of course, we will use all possible legal mechanisms, the ones we have available now, and all the ones we will have available in the future. Based on the principle of reciprocity, we will take revenge for this, but we will choose different methods in accordance with our interests," he told reporters.

European leaders have stated that they intend to use the benefits of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine, which since 2022 is facing a full-scale invasion launched by Russia.

Western officials are moving to confiscate Russia's frozen financial assets, worth an estimated $300-350 billion, to prop up Ukraine.

Almost the majority of the almost 210 billion euros of Russian reserves blocked in the EU - primarily bonds and other types of guarantees in which the Central Bank of Russia had invested - are being held in the depository called Euroclear in Brussels./ REL
