Increasing number of parcels/ Germany takes measures to strengthen its customs

Germany is taking steps to strengthen its customs service as parcel volumes have increased significantly. Around 1,500 new positions are planned this year.

Germany's customs processed nearly 790 million shipments last year, up from 595 million the year before. The agency also collected 157 billion euros in import taxes and duties in 2025, while continuing to crack down on counterfeit goods, protected species and banned medicines.

Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil says the agency needed more resources to cope with growing pressure, especially from low-cost imports.

Customs currently employs about 49,000 people across the country. Klingbeil noted a significant increase in shipments driven by international online trade, particularly from China.

"It's a problem that old Chinese goods are flooding our markets ," Klingbeil said.

He added that Germany and the EU are tightening rules, including removing the duty-free threshold for parcels under 150 euros ($176) from July and introducing an additional fee at the EU level by November at the latest.

Klingbeil also stressed that cheap imports should face stricter controls for environmental and consumer protection reasons. /CNA
