The Commission published an updated list of countries that have demonstrated compliance with EU restrictions on the use of antimicrobials in animals. Under EU rules, such substances cannot be used to promote growth or increase production in livestock and other food-producing animals.
Health Commission spokeswoman Eva Hrncirova announced on Tuesday that Brazil will be banned from exporting meat to the EU starting in September unless the country demonstrates compliance with the bloc's rules on antimicrobial resistance.
"The Commission confirms that Brazil is no longer included in the list, which means that it can no longer export to the EU goods, both live food-producing animals and derived products, such as cattle, horses, poultry, eggs, aquaculture, honey, with effect from 3 September 2026," said Hrncirova.
The European Commission has repeatedly stressed that EU food safety rules will continue to apply to agricultural products imported from Latin America once the agreement enters into force. /CNA
