Abandonment of villages/ Economic crisis drives mass exodus

2026-06-28 10:36:00, Sociale CNA

Villages are facing one of the most serious demographic crises in recent decades. Official data from the Institute of Statistics, also highlighted in the latest census measurements, show a drastic decline in the number of residents outside urban centers. Hundreds of homes have been left foreclosed, while agricultural lands are being left fallow.

According to INSTAT reports and demographic surveys, the departure of people from these areas is not a random phenomenon, but a movement forced by living conditions.

The main reason for this abandonment remains the economy. The lack of stable employment opportunities and inadequate income from the agricultural sector have pushed residents to seek a better standard of living in large cities or abroad.

Another essential factor identified in the analyses of official institutions is the deficient infrastructure and the inadequacy of vital services.

People are abandoning their villages because they face daily difficulties in accessing health centers and quality educational institutions for their children. The dilapidated road network in some of the remote administrative units further exacerbates the isolation of these communities.

The data confirm two main directions of this movement, internal migration towards the capital and the central area of ??the country, as well as external emigration towards European Union countries.

The consequences of this trend are already tangible. The suburbs are rapidly turning into settlements for an aging population, a situation that not only endangers their heritage and social structure, but also deals a direct blow to agricultural production, one of the most vital sectors of the national economy. /CNA
