78 MPs demanded his resignation/Starmer convenes cabinet, announces decision

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced at a cabinet meeting that he will not resign and will continue to govern the country. Starmer also said that he takes responsibility for the heavy defeat in the recent election.

"As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised. The last 48 hours have been destabilising for the government and this has come at a real economic cost to our country and to families. The Labour Party has a process to challenge a leader and that process has not yet been activated. The country expects us to continue to govern. That is what I am doing and that is what we as a cabinet must do," he said at the meeting.

So far, 78 Labour Party MPs have called on Starmer to leave his post or have set a deadline for his resignation.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told Starmer he must oversee an orderly transition of power. Four senior ministers said they were resigning, believing Starmer was not the right man to lead the Labour Party into the next national election, scheduled for 2029. / CNA
