Qatari PM: Tehran should not use Strait of Hormuz for blackmail

Qatar's diplomat and prime minister has said that Iran should not blackmail Gulf states with its control over the Strait of Hormuz, which it has practically blocked since the US and Israel launched attacks on the Islamic Republic in late February.

"Iran should not use this strait as a weapon to exert pressure or blackmail the Gulf countries ," Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said at a press conference in Doha with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.  

The latter also said that the waterway should not be used as a weapon. Iran's blockade of the strait, a major waterway for oil transportation, has damaged the economies of several Gulf countries, as well as the rest of the world.

They have also been frequently attacked during the war sparked by the US-Israeli offensive, with Tehran targeting the American assets they house, but also civilian infrastructure, airports and energy facilities. /CNA
