Syria today carried out its first official crude oil export in 14 years, transporting 600,000 barrels of heavy crude oil from the port of Tartus, an energy ministry official said.
The cargo was sold to the trading company B Serve Energy, which is affiliated with the international company BB Energy.
It is the first known export since 2010, when Syria was producing 380,000 barrels a day before anti-government protests and the nearly 14-year war that followed, destroying much of the economy and infrastructure.
Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, the new Islamist government has vowed to revive the country's economy. Riad al-Jubasi, deputy director for oil and gas at the energy ministry, said the cargo was coming from several fields, without giving details.
Although local authorities had begun supplying Damascus with oil since February, relations have deteriorated due to concerns about the rights of minorities, including the Kurds. /CNA
