Indian Prime Minister holds talks with Vladimir Putin in the Russian

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says he had a "deep" exchange of conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a summit in China. The two leaders spent 45 minutes inside the Russian leader's car, after which Modi posted a photo of their trip along with a compliment to Putin.

"They were at home... They felt comfortable there and that's why they continued the conversation," Putin's spokesman said.

The meeting came after scenes of the two sides hugging as they were hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, which is being seen as a challenge to US President Donald Trump and US global dominance. Trump has imposed 50% US tariffs on goods from India as a way to punish Delhi for buying Russian oil and arms.

India, a vital U.S. strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific, has shown no sign of halting its purchases, and the gathering with Putin in Tianjin is being seen in the context of Trump’s threats. Until recently, the U.S. was India’s largest trading partner. For his part, Putin was facing a deadline set by Trump to agree to hold peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russia has said it has no plans for any such meeting.

Speaking at the summit in Tianjin, Putin thanked Chinese and Indian leaders for their support and efforts to "facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis."/ C NA, translated by BBC
