Japanese tourist dies after falling from iconic monument in Rome

A Japanese tourist has died in Rome after falling from the outer wall of the Pantheon, one of Italy's most iconic monuments. The 69-year-old was sitting on the outer wall of the Pantheon when, under unclear circumstances, he fell into a space about seven meters deep that surrounds the monument.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene, but the tourist had died at the scene. Rome police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident. According to Italian media, the tourist was in Rome with his daughter, who told authorities that her father lost his balance after suddenly feeling unwell.

The area around the outer wall of the Pantheon is particularly crowded with tourists who stop to rest or take photos. The Pantheon, built by the Roman emperor Hadrian and known for its imposing dome with its characteristic opening, remains one of the most visited monuments in Italy.

Entry to the monument was free until 2023, when a five-euro ticket was introduced, a decision that had caused reactions but did not reduce its popularity. In 2024 alone, more than four million people visited it, with queues forming every day in Piazza della Rotonda. /CNA
