Ethnic Armenian refugees are fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh following Azerbaijan's invasion of the region last week.

More than 6,500 people have so far crossed into Armenia from the enclave, which is home to a majority of about 120,000 ethnic Armenians.

They left after the government in Yerevan announced plans to relocate those displaced by the fighting.

Armenia's prime minister has warned that ethnic cleansing is underway in the region.

"This is happening right now, and this is a very unfortunate fact, because we were trying to push the international community for this," Nikol Pashinyan told reporters.

On the other hand, Azerbaijan has declared that it wants to reintegrate ethnic Armenians as equal citizens.

Envoys from Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet for EU-backed talks in Brussels on Tuesday. These are the first talks since the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller urged the two sides to reach a lasting peace agreement.

In the main city of Karabakh, Stepanakert, there was an explosion at a gas station from which more than 200 people were seriously injured./ CNA
