The Hungarian President signed the ratification of Sweden's membership in

The President of Hungary, Tamas Sulyok, signed on Tuesday the draft law through which his country approved Sweden's membership in the military alliance, NATO, the president's office announced.

This paves the way for Sweden to become the 32nd member of the military alliance in the coming days.

Now, the remaining formalities, such as the submission of membership documents to Washington, are expected to be completed very soon. "This is very important and I hope we will become members within days, not weeks. It will be good for Sweden and good for NATO. It will be good for stability in the entire Euro-Atlantic area that Sweden can be a full member of NATO", said the Minister of Defense of Sweden, Pal Jonson, at a conference in Stockholm.

At the end of February, the Parliament of Hungary approved with 188 votes for and six against the draft law enabling Sweden to join NATO.

Hungary was the only country of the 31 member countries of NATO that had blocked the membership of this Nordic country in the North Atlantic alliance.

Sweden applied to join the transatlantic military alliance nearly two years ago, prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The accession of Finland last year and now Sweden, which has not been at war since 1814, is NATO's most significant expansion since it welcomed new members from Eastern Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Their membership is also a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who now faces an almost unbreakable chain of NATO members west of his country, from the Black Sea to the Arctic.
