President Biden warns Iran that it will face costs for suppressing protests
US President, Joe Biden

Protests continue in Iran, while the United States said it would impose "further costs" on Tehran for its deadly crackdown on them.

Protests in Iran began after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was announced on September 16, days after the notorious morality police arrested her on suspicion of violating rules on wearing the hijab and not wearing modest clothing.

Her death has sparked the biggest wave of protests to rock Iran in almost three years, while efforts to quell them have left dozens dead and more than a thousand arrested.

Mr. Biden did not say specifically what measures he was considering. Iran is already under US sanctions related mainly to its nuclear program. Recent sanctions have included responses to Tehran's cyber activities, including cyber attacks on Albania.

Iran accused the US leader of "hypocrisy" on Tuesday.

"It would have been better for Mr. Joe Biden to think about human rights in his country before making humanitarian gestures," said the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanani./ VOA
