The police kill the teenager/ Protests erupt in Paris

Protests and riots erupted in the French capital overnight after police shot dead a 17-year-old boy who disobeyed police orders to stop.

The teenager, named Naël M, died as a result of bullet wounds in the chest, despite emergency help.

The officer accused of shooting him has been arrested on charges of murder.

According to Le Monde newspaper, police initially suggested the teenager drove his car at them with the intention of hurting them.

But footage posted online, verified by the AFP news agency, shows a different version.

It shows two officers trying to stop the vehicle. One points a gun at the driver through the window and appears to fire at point-blank range as he tries to drive away.

The agency also reports that a person in the video can be heard saying "they're going to shoot you in the head" — but it's unclear who is saying that.

Two others were in the car at the time of the shooting, one fled while another, a minor, was arrested and held by the police.

The event sparked large protests in Nanterre, the area west of Paris where the teenager was killed.

Cars and garbage cans were burned and bus shelters were destroyed. Fireworks were lit near the police station. Police used tear gas to disperse the protesters, some of whom set up barricades throughout the night.

20 people were arrested from the protest./ CNA
