"Priority, reopening the Strait of Hormuz"/ Macron holds phone

French President Emmanuel Macron has held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump and the leaders of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan about the war in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz, as US negotiations with Iran intensify.

"France is pushing for a diplomatic path and a negotiated solution, with the number one priority being the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, fully and without tariffs, the conclusion of a ceasefire and the resumption of negotiations on other aspects (nuclear, ballistic and regional) ," a diplomatic source said of the talks between the leaders.

Tehran and Washington reported progress in their negotiations today after weeks of tensions and diplomatic consultations, but remained cautious about the chances of ending the war.

A deal is "close," President Trump said, downplaying the chances of a "good" deal or a resumption of the war, in statements he made to US media. Diplomatic communications have multiplied in recent hours with the aim of reaching a result in the negotiations and avoiding a resumption of the war. /CNA
