The Canadian province of Alberta will hold a referendum later this year on whether to remain part of Canada or hold a second binding vote on independence.

Premier Danielle Smith's announcement comes after a popular initiative calling for secession gathered more than 300,000 signatures. A separate initiative supporting Alberta's position was also in the works, gathering more than 400,000 signatures. The referendum is scheduled for Oct. 19.

The question Albertans will be asked will be: "Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Alberta government begin the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding referendum in the province on whether Alberta should separate from Canada?"

It is the first major test of the country's unity in decades. Alberta is an oil-rich province whose residents have long felt ignored by the capital, Ottawa. Polls show, however, that a majority of Albertans will vote against secession.

Another Canadian province with an active secessionist movement is Quebec, which has held two referendums. In the second, in 1995, the result was considered close, with the "remain" vote at 50.58%. /CNA
