NATO chief Mark Rutte said on Friday that he welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement to send 5,000 troops to Poland.
According to Rutte, the general trend remains towards a stronger Europe that is less dependent on the United States for its defense.
"Let's be clear; the path we are on, a stronger Europe and a stronger NATO, so that over time, step by step, we are less dependent on a single ally, will continue," Rutte told reporters ahead of a NATO summit in Sweden.
The US will play a key role in Europe in terms of nuclear deterrence, but also conventional defense, through a gradual process in which Europe will strengthen its role, Rutte emphasized.
