The Ukrainian military has struck a Russian intelligence base in Kherson. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, about 100 Russian troops were killed and wounded in the attack.

Zelensky also said that the attacks had caused a Pantsir-S1 air defense system worth up to $20 million.

"The Russians must understand that they must end this war. Medium- and long-term sanctions on Ukraine will continue to be in effect ," Zelensky said.

The Kherson Oblast in southern Ukraine has remained a key battleground since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Russian forces occupied most of the region in the first months of the war, including Kherson, before Ukrainian troops liberated the city in November 2022.

Parts of the oblast east of the Dnieper River remain under Russian occupation and are often the target of Ukrainian attacks on military infrastructure and logistics.

Ukrainian forces regularly attack Russian military targets in Russia and in Russian-occupied territories in an effort to disrupt Moscow's military operations. In early May, Ukrainian drones also struck a Russian intelligence facility in Russian-occupied Crimea. /CNA
