6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off coast of Peru

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Peru near the southern city of Ica.

The tremors were 41 km south of Ica, a city of 453,000 inhabitants, at a depth of 81 km, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru.

Local media reported that many people were evacuated from buildings, shopping malls and homes after the earthquake, which was felt as far as the capital Lima, located 400 km from Ica.

Peru, located on the 'Pacific Ring of Fire', experiences significant seismic activity, with around 100 earthquakes recorded each year. /CNA
