Two trams collide in the center of Dusseldorf / 28 people injured, 5 in serious

A serious accident has occurred in the western German city of Dusseldorf, where two trams collided with each other. According to local media reports, 28 people were injured, while the incident took place in the city center.

Five of the injured suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital in critical condition. The local fire service said most of the passengers on board managed to escape the carriages without any problems.

Public broadcaster WDR reported that both trams derailed during the collision and that some of the seats were torn from their seats. At the time of the accident, hundreds of thousands of people had gathered in the city for the largest Japanese cultural festival in Europe.

Known as the Little Tokyo on the Rhine, Düsseldorf is home to an estimated 8,000-8,500 Japanese residents, the largest in Germany. Services along the affected tram lines were diverted, a spokesman for Rheinbahn, the public transport operator, told DPA. /CNA
