WHO's dire warning: Ebola cases in regions far from the origin of the

Global health authorities have sounded the alarm that the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is spreading rapidly, with cases now being identified in regions far from the original epicenter, indicating that the figures so far represent only a small part of the reality.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed 750 cases and 177 suspected deaths, assessing the situation as a very high national risk and a health emergency of international concern.

The situation is complicated by the fact that the outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is not yet an approved vaccine or treatment, unlike the more common Zaire strain.

Jane Halton from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) acknowledged that the challenge of producing and distributing an effective vaccine in such a short time is extraordinary.

As a result of this threat, Uganda has temporarily suspended passenger transport with Congo, while the planned summit between India and the African Union has been postponed as a security measure in the face of this developing health crisis./ CNA
