The condition of Pope Francis improves

Pope Francis' condition is improving after being hospitalized with a respiratory infection. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement Thursday that the Holy Father has resumed work while he continues to receive treatment.

"His Holiness Pope Francis spent a restful night. His clinical condition is gradually improving and he is continuing the planned treatment," the statement said.

"Today after having breakfast, he read the newspapers and resumed work," the statement further said.

Spokesman Bruni did not say when Pope Francis could leave Rome's "Gemelli" hospital. The Vatican said on Wednesday that he was expected to stay there for "several days".

The pope was suddenly taken to hospital after complaining of breathing difficulties, raising new concerns about the health of the 86-year-old pontiff, who suffers from a number of ailments.

Italian news agency ANSA reported earlier that medical staff were "very optimistic" that the pope could be released from hospital in time for Palm Sunday celebrations on April 2 -- the start of the Catholic Easter week on April 9.

It is not clear whether the Pope will be able to attend the various services, even if he is released from the hospital during the weekend./ VOA
