The EP plans to cut pensions for former MPs

Recently, the European Parliament has undertaken an initiative to reduce by 50 percent the pensions of former members of this parliament.

The Heads of Parliament, President Roberta Metsola and the 14 Deputy Speakers of the Parliament organized a closed door meeting regarding this issue.

The agreement aims to reduce pensions by 50%, increase the retirement age from 65 to 67 and the payment will depend on the time of service in the Parliament.

It also includes a voluntary withdrawal clause from the pension scheme through a one-time payment.

"The measures put in place, once finalized, will protect the interest of the general taxpayer and the EU, being in line with EU law and minimizing the reduction of beneficiaries," a Parliament press officer told EURACTIV .
