Belgium on September 23 went ahead with plans to shut down a nuclear reactor, despite calls to rethink the decision due to fears of power cuts this winter.
Located between France, which depends on nuclear power, and Germany, which depends on gas and coal, Belgium depends for half of its electricity demand on seven aging nuclear reactors operated by Engie, the French company.
However, Belgium's state-owned energy operator Elia said it does not expect any supply risks.
"We have sufficient power generation capacity to cover the demand," said a spokesman for Elias.
Since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the energy crisis in Europe has worsened, as Europeans are expected to pay more expensive energy bills this winter and some countries have warned that there may be reductions./ REL
