"Operation Midnight Hammer"/ Details of the American bombing of Iran

Senior Pentagon officials revealed new details about the US operation to bomb three nuclear sites in Iran, with the chairman of the US Army Joint Chiefs of Staff saying it was the "largest operational B-2 strike in US history" and that it caused extremely severe damage and destruction to the targets.

At around 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, shortly before the plane entered Iranian airspace, a U.S. submarine launched a large number of Tomahawk missiles against targets at the attack site in Isfahan. As the bombers approached their targets, the U.S. used “several deception tactics, including decoys,” and fighter jets cleared the airspace ahead of them, checking for enemy aircraft and surface-to-air missiles.

At approximately 6:40 p.m. Eastern Time, or 2:10 a.m. in Iran, the lead B-2 dropped two "bunker-buster" bombs known as GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators, or MOPs, on the attack site at Fordow. Over the next 25 minutes, a total of 14 MOPs would be dropped on targets at Fordow and Natanz. The Tomahawk missiles fell on Isfahan after the bombs were dropped on the other two sites.

U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bombers dropped 14 30,000-pound GBU-57/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker-busting bombs on Iran's Fordow and Natanz nuclear facilities. The strike marked the first operational use of MOPs. A total of 125 aircraft, including B-2s, supported the air component of the operation.

The Isfahan facility was hit with multiple Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles (TLAMs) launched from a single submarine somewhere in the region. Although it was not explicitly stated at today's briefing, the only ships in U.S. service with the capability to launch that many TLAMs at once are the U.S. Navy's four Ohio-class nuclear-powered guided missile submarines, or SSGNs./CNA
