Olaf Scholz loses vote of confidence/ Germany, in early elections

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, lost the vote of confidence in the Parliament this Monday.

This has paved the way for early elections on February 23, reports " BBC ".

207 lawmakers in the Bundestag voted for Scholz, another 394 voted against, while 116 abstained.

He needed a majority of 367 votes to win the vote of confidence, while abstentions count as votes against.

After the loss of confidence, the chancellor will suggest to the Federal President that the Bundestag be dissolved.

The federal president must do so within 21 days.

If the Federal President dissolves the Bundestag, there must be new elections within 60 days of its dissolution.

Earlier, Scholz said that new elections are a necessary step to overcome the current political deadlock.

The current chancellor is expected to run again in the February elections./ CNA
