At a time of epochal challenges, when the European Union is threatened from the outside by Russia's aggressive war and from the inside by racists and demagogues, Ursula von der Leyen strongly defends Europe's interests, argues the decision to honor this year's prestigious international Charlemagne Prize to the President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. This recognition should support her in "leading the EU as a peace-promoting, democratizing and partnership power."

The Charlemagne Prize Directorate in Aachen considers von der Leyen's commitment to limiting the Corona pandemic, her firm and decisive stance against Russia, and her push for the "Green Deal", with which the EU aims to be climate neutral by 2050, to be a special achievement.

The 66-year-old von der Leyen has been the president of the European Commission in Brussels since 2019. After the European Parliament elections in June 2024, where the center-right European People's Party (EPP) alliance won the majority of votes, the German politician was re-elected for a second term in this position. Before taking office in Brussels, the Christian Democratic politician served for six years as minister of defense in Germany, among other things.

The 19 members of the Aachen board of directors in the text formulated for the award of the von der Leyen prize also draw attention to the fact that: "The European model of life in freedom, peace, democracy and prosperity is at risk." The world order is changing, and Europe must act. Ursula von der Leyen is the person who has this strategic task for the European Union and who "is up to it." She has made a special contribution to ensuring that the EU is "facing epochal crises with determination and success." After the European Parliament elections in June, she succeeded in uniting parts of the political center and creating a clear pan-European majority, it is further stated.

The EU Commission President expressed her "deeply touched" by this assessment. She thanked "all those who believe in Europe," von der Leyen said on the X platform.
