The Recak Massacre/Kurti: Genocide against the people of Kosovo

Today marks the 26th anniversary of the Recak Massacre in Kosovo.

The ceremony took place this morning, during which wreaths were laid. The highest heads of state were also present.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, in his speech stated that this massacre is a genocide against the people of Kosovo. “The history of the people of Kosovo is that of the triumph of freedom,” Kurti said.

Meanwhile, he did not hesitate to say that uncovering massacres is an institutional responsibility.

Meanwhile, the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said that the images of this massacre shocked the world.

The History of the Racak Massacre

The horrific event took place on January 15, 1999, when 45 Albanians were killed. The massacre was organized and carried out by Serbian police, military and paramilitary forces. Serbia denies having carried out such a massacre.

The day after the massacre, William Walker, the OSCE ambassador to Kosovo, visited the scene and was horrified by the massacred bodies. "From what I saw, I have no hesitation in describing the incident as a massacre and a crime against humanity. This is the saddest event in my life," he said.

Former police officers Zoran Stanojevic and Cedomir Aksic were sentenced to 15 years in prison each for this event./ CNA
