NATO launches new mission in the Baltic Sea, aiming to increase security

NATO has announced the development of a new mission in the Baltic Sea, and the aim is to increase surveillance of ships. This comes after critical undersea cables were damaged or severed last year. The mission is called "Baltic Sentry".

NATO chief Mark Rutte said the mission would include more patrol aircraft, warships and drones. Russia was not directly singled out as being responsible for damaging the cables.

He made the announcement at a summit held in Helsinki attended by all NATO countries located in the Baltic Sea - Finland, Estonia, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden.

Underwater infrastructure is essential not only for the supply of electricity, but also because more than 95% of internet traffic is provided via underwater cables. It is estimated that 1.3 million kilometers (800,000 miles) of cables guarantee a financial value of $10 trillion in transactions every day./ CNA
