The NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, has announced that in the coming days it will conduct regular military exercises near the base it has in Novosella.

According to a press release, the exercises aim to train KFOR units to guarantee freedom of movement in times of crisis and "consist of a series of tactical simulations and logistical activities, including heavy equipment and helicopters".

The announcement of these exercises comes at a time when the Kosovo authorities are calling for the removal of barricades erected by local Serbs in the north of Kosovo.

While the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has said that he expects KFOR to remove these barricades, the United States envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, has told Radio Free Europe that he expects the barricades to be removed by the people who raised them. Finally, the Serbian authorities have sent a request to KFOR for the commitment of up to 1,000 Serbian security personnel in Kosovo, invoking United Nations resolution 1244.

The NATO mission has confirmed for Radio Free Europe the acceptance of the request and said that it is "examining it"./ Rel
