Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton passes away

The sports world is in mourning after the passing of former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton. The news was shared by the World Boxing Association via its social media channels.

According to initial reports, Hatton's body was found by Greater Manchester Police at a flat in Hyde, England. The cause of death has not yet been revealed, however police said that suspicious circumstances are not currently suspected.

During his amateur career, Hatton distinguished himself for his talent and discipline, winning seven British titles. He represented England at the 1996 AIBA World Youth Boxing Championships, where he was controversially eliminated in the semi-finals. Years later, it was revealed that a referee had been bribed, a fact that disillusioned the young boxer and prompted him to turn professional at the age of 18.

Hatton made his professional debut in September 1997 with a technical knockout of Colin McAuley and quickly earned a place on major fight cards, including a show at Madison Square Garden during a Naseem Hamed event. In 1999, he won his first international title by defeating Dillon Carew to capture the WBO Intercontinental Light Welterweight title. He later captured the WBA Intercontinental title and the vacant British title against Jon Thaxton./CNA
